Go Green and Save!

Today we all have a greater understanding of environmental issues and their global impact.  As consumers, you face high energy prices, tighter and more expensive water supplies, and more strict enforcement of noise pollution. Fortunately, there are many new technologies and smarter products that enable you to make environmentally responsible and money saving choices. Performance Pools would like you to join us in our goal of reducing energy costs, pollution, and unnecessary chemical use.  Please take a moment to review the products that we have researched and selected that best meet these goals. It is our hope that together we can maximize the enjoyment of your pool or spa while making a lasting difference to the environment.

The benefits of going green

Not only will you notice a savings by upgrading individual pieces of equipment, you can save even more (and make an even greater environmental impact) by upgrading all of your outdated equipment. This is because there can be synergistic effects as well. Some examples are:

  • You can improve filter media by slowing pump speed, which allows a greater usage of the media’s surface area. The effect is you minimize the energy use of the more efficient pump, minimize water use and have cleaner water in the process. (Intelliflo)

  • Heat your water quicker and more efficiently.  If you optimize flow using a variable speed pump and couple that with a high efficient heater you can save even more money. When water flow is optimized through the heater, the time it takes to heat to the desired temperature will be cut dramatically saving on energy and gas. (LXi heater)

  • Make sanitizer more effective by running a variable speed pump at lower speeds. When flow is slowed down and the time the chemicals have to work is increased, improving water quality and consuming less chemicals.

  • Use natural products, such as moss or salt to enhance water quality and cut down on commercially packaged chemical sanitizers. (Aquapure)

Why slower is better - a note on variable speed pumps

Bigger is not necessarily better- when it comes to pool pumps anyway. Many pool owners are not aware that the best way to cut pump energy costs is to operate at the lowest flow rate needed to accomplish the job.  It takes far less energy to move water slowly than quickly. This is because there is lower resistance in the filter, plumbing, and equipment. Even though the pump will work longer at a lower flow rate this is, in fact, more efficient. Reducing pump motor speed by half actually reduces the power needed by one eighth. Compare that to getting better gas mileage in you car at 30 miles per hour vs driving 90 miles per hour. Traditional pool pumps offer a limited number of fixed single or 2-speed pumps. These speeds are almost always set higher than required, thereby putting out too much power for the job and wasting energy. Therefore, a good starting point for any “go green” option is a variable speed pump. When coupled with other green options you can vastly increase savings on water, energy, chemicals, and best of all, your wallet. When you go green, you can feel good about your pool and know that you are helping the environment at the same time.

Pentair Intelliflo Variable Speed Pump
The IntelliFlo pump offers a way to dramatically cut your energy costs.  That's because of a revolutionary new motor and built-in microprocessor that programs IntelliFlo to work at that exact level - and no harder. The result is savings in energy consumption up to 90%. Typical savings can be $600-$1000 in a seven month operating season
The IntelliFlo® VS-3050 with programmable, variable speed technology saves energy and money while enabling critical parts to last years longer. The IntelliFlo® VS-3050 utilizes an efficient permanent magnintellifloet motor (the same type used in hybrid cars) and adds world class digital controls that allow programming of four different speeds for different jobs. Each setting can range from 400 to 3450 RPMs. The IntelliFlo operates at an average of 1/10th of a horsepower, using about 100 watts of energy. This is about the same as a light bulb. This pump is perfect for the swimming pool owner who has a single pump system with multiple features.

Zeobrite® Pool Filter Media
Zeobrite is made from an all natural mineral featuring an irregular crystal structure with larger surface area, pits, and voids. These features help trap more particulates and ammonium ions, making it a far more efficient filter zeobritemedia than sand.
Your water will be crystal clear faster (filtering down to a 3 micron particle vs. 20-100 micron for sand), as well as, reducing odor and eye irritants. Total operating costs will be reduced because you will be backwashing less, thus saving water, energy, labor, and chemicals.
Best of all, all natural Zeobrite  lasts just as long as sand. When its time for replacement, it can be mixed into garden soil or spread over the lawn as a natural soil enhancer.

Jandy LXi  pool heater– The next generation in heating technology
This heater is built for dependability and efficiency- 82%. At the heart of its efficiency is an ingenious fan assistedlxi low NOx combustion chamber surrounded by ceramic fiber insulation. Other features include hot surface ignition system and a unique C-fin heat exchanger. The LXi heater meets all current clean air standards making it one of the most environmentally responsible heaters on the market. If you are looking to reduce your heating costs and lower emissions, contact Performance Pools  for pricing or to schedule installation.

Pool Naturally- the all natural way to sanitize your pool

naturalEnjoy a naturally balanced and more comfortable pool water – from MOSS.
Moss is nature’s way to actively filter, condition, and buffer water. Studies show that a specific type of moss (the moss used by Pool and Spa Naturally) demonstrates a number of unique characteristics that buffer and filter water by releasing conditioning substances and actively removing ions from water. Consequently, using moss can naturalreduce chlorine, algaecide, and stain and scale removers needed by up to 90%. The Pool Naturally system dispenser is easily installed on new or existing pools. Once the dispenser is installed, simply replace the moss refills every month.  It’s that easy!

Jandy Aquapure- salt chlorine generation system

Utilizing ordinary salt, the electrolytic AquaPure cell generates free chlorine for your pool. As the salt in the water passes through the AquaPure cell, it converts to free chlorine and continuously kills bacteria and algae while maintaining the desired sanitization you need to keep your water pure and clean. When the chlorine is finished purifying the pool water, it converts back into salt and the whole cycle repeats.aquapure
Since you are only using ordinary salt you eliminate you no longer need to transport, handle or store chlorine. As more people switch to salt chlorine systems less chlorine needs to be produced at chemical processing plants. This reduces emissions and energy use from production, packaging, and transportation.
